Le 4C del diamante: la Purezza

The 4Cs of Diamond: Purity

Today we talk about Purity, from the English Clarity , this sweet-sounding name that is actually really important for the classification of the perfect diamond. Let's find out together what it means!

What is purity?

Clarity is the measure of the internal defects of the diamond, which in expert jargon are called ''inclusions''.

What does 'inclusions' mean?

This is the presence of a crystal of foreign material, small cracks or whitish halos, present inside the diamond. The clarity scale varies according to the number, color, position, size and visibility of these imperfections.

Purity scale

There is a specific scale for grading clarity, developed by the GIA, the Gemological Institute of America , which starts from the inclusions visible on a diamond observed under ten times magnification. Obviously, it goes without saying, only expert professionals can notice such imperfections.

Diamonds and Purity

At Ferro Gioielli we deal with quality jewelry: as such, the diamonds used or put on the market must have a high purity rate. But only 20% of the diamonds extracted have a purity score sufficient for jewelry use ! In fact, most diamonds are only used industrially, and are definitely of lower quality than high jewelry. This does not take away the fact that even 20% of the diamonds dedicated to jewelry actually have many small inclusions.

Problems?

Most inclusions do not compromise the structure and value of the gem: only occasionally, particularly large white halos can inhibit the diamond's ability to transmit light. Another problem is given by cracks : if they are too close to the surface of the gem, there is a risk that it will fracture.

Clarity is certainly one of the most important factors to take into consideration when it comes to high quality, precious and bright diamonds!
I hope this journey to discover the characteristics of diamonds has fascinated you as much as it has fascinated me!
