The difference between jewelry and bijoux
Precious accessories that leave us speechless. Unexpected gifts to capture a memory. Jewels are undoubtedly objects of great seductive charm, which sometimes contain an immense sentimental value. But what is the difference between jewels and bijoux?
The difference between jewelry and bijoux
The terms
Understanding the substantial difference between the two terms can help us make more informed purchases, understand the value (economic, in this case) of our precious accessories and carefully choose the ones we want to give to those we love.
Languages help us. In French we speak of bijoux or bijoux de couture, in English of fashion jewelry and fine jewelry, while in our language of bijoux and gioielli.
Fashion and precious
Preciousness, at least in other languages, lies entirely in the adjective. Fashion jewelry, but often of lower quality, in fact, is well distinguished from precious jewelry. In our language, bijoux and gioielli are therefore two different terms, even though they represent, in the collective imagination, necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings. Bijoux is therefore the fashion accessory, while the jewel is made with a precious metal, often with one or more gems.
Materials and value
The jewels, therefore, can be made of silver, gold, platinum , palladium and titanium and are made in goldsmith's art. The most used gems by expert gemologists are diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds, but also aquamarines, amethysts, topazes, pearls, opals and so on.
In jewelry, however, the materials used are often less valuable, such as bronze, steel, aluminum, plexiglass or other materials.
In short, the jewel is made with metals, has a greater value and represents an opportunity for the future. It is a real 'precious', handcrafted and created specifically to contain all our dreams.
