5 curiosities about jewelry
Every now and then we find ourselves wondering what the most curious or strange characteristics of the objects we use every day are. Where did the idea for that accessory come from? Who wore that necklace? Today I'm here to offer you 5 curiosities about jewelry!
Very ancient jewels
The oldest jewel ever found dates back to 75,000 years ago. These are pearls, made from ancient shells. The first jewels, as old as humanity, were in fact created from materials used in everyday life, such as shells. The oldest jewel in the world, a shell necklace, comes from South Africa . The jewel is made with 41 marine pearls , drilled to be threaded on a thread of material that cannot yet be specified. The discovery is extraordinary because the necklace would have been produced 30,000 years before the artistic works found so far. In short, homo sapiens sapiens would have started to engage in the creation of tools not related to daily needs much earlier than previously believed.
Lucy
For the second of the 5 curiosities about jewels, let's fly into space! In fact, among the stars there is a diamond the same size as the Moon, our satellite. The diamond has been named ''Lucy'', in honor of the Beatles song, ''Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds''. The diameter of the maxi-diamond is 4000 km!
Moulin Rouge
Australian designer (of Italian origins!) Stefano Canturi created a necklace worth one million dollars for the film Moulin Rouge. The necklace, made of platinum and more than 1300 diamonds, is the most expensive jewel ever made for a film. Nicole Kidman, the protagonist of the film, wears it in all her charm!
Ancient China
In ancient China, silver was preferred to gold. In addition, jade was worshipped, a precious stone considered to bring beauty and strength. The sumptuous jewelry was often made of silver, gems, and blue kingfisher feathers.
Cocktail
The so-called ''cocktail ring'' is a jewel born in the 20s, during the American Prohibition. The illegal clubs, located in the basements of the buildings, allowed access only to very few women: sumptuous and large rings signaled that the women who wore them could afford illegal drinks.
These were 5 curiosities about jewelry that I had fun unearthing, so I could tell you about them in this post.
