Sapphire, a precious gem

Sapphire is a corundum with a fascinating blue color given by inclusions of hematite and rutile. Sometimes it can be black or yellow, although its most known and appreciated variety is undoubtedly the blue one.

Sapphire is chemically composed of aluminum oxide. The name comes from the Greek sappheiros, meaning "blue", but it could also come from the Hebrew sappir, meaning "the most beautiful thing".

The largest sapphire deposits are in Australia, Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Madagascar and India. Even in our Italy you can find small crystals in Terminillo.

Sapphire, due to its special color, goes well with any metal, appearing colder or warmer depending on the combination with silver and white gold, or with yellow gold.
