Ear Piercing at the Pharmacy: Safety, Convenience and Comfort

The practice of piercing the earlobes for the insertion of earrings is a widespread custom in our society, often carried out from the first years of life of children. However, the Italian Society of Dermatology has recently launched an appeal to raise awareness on the importance of preventing possible problems and infections resulting from piercings and punctures.

What the law says

According to Italian law, earlobe piercing is allowed before the age of 14 with parental consent, while tattoos and piercings are prohibited precisely to prevent complications. Regardless of age, it is essential that the procedure is done safely and with strict hygiene standards, especially in children. In fact, after piercing, infections, allergies and scars could occur that could be avoided with the necessary precautions, even for future holes in adulthood.

Anyone who performs ear piercing must be certified in health practices and ensure the use of sterile or disposable equipment, as prescribed by current laws, in order to prevent contamination and protect the health of the client and operators.

After piercing, it is advisable to keep the earrings for at least 6 weeks, even at night, to prevent the hole from closing in the lobe. It is also important to wash the earrings daily with water and mild soap and apply a thin layer of Vaseline around the holes to promote faster healing.

How to prevent

To prevent the formation of keloids, scar-like thickenings that can occur around the site of the piercing, it is advisable to avoid piercing the edge of the ears, especially in predisposed children, and to promptly consult a dermatologist if symptoms of keloid appear. The latter may recommend specific treatments such as the use of modern lasers to optimize the results.

Finally, it is important to prevent, recognize and treat any infections or allergies. In the case of symptoms such as redness, swelling or abnormal secretions, it is advisable to consult a doctor to evaluate the need for adequate therapy, which could include the use of antibiotic ointments or cortisone creams.

During pregnancy and for people predisposed to the formation of keloids, earlobe piercing is not recommended to avoid possible complications that could represent risks for the health of the fetus or worsen the scarring conditions.

Ear piercings at the pharmacy

If you want to get your ears pierced, a pharmacy may be your best option. An experienced and qualified operator will be able to perform the piercing safely and reliably, no matter how many holes you want or which ear they will be pierced.

Ear piercing in a pharmacy is practical and safe, as it is performed in strict compliance with the necessary hygiene standards. However, it is important to understand that not all piercing methods are the same and that they can vary in the technique and materials used.

It is essential to know the piercing method used by the pharmacist and choose the one that best suits your needs and preferences. Whether you are an adult or a child, ensuring maximum comfort, speed and sterility during the procedure is essential.

Relying on ear piercing at a pharmacy offers numerous advantages. First of all, the convenience of having this service available directly in the place where you purchase everyday products and medications. Secondly, the possibility of receiving expert advice from qualified staff on the best piercing technique and the materials most suited to your needs.

Ultimately, if you are considering getting your ears pierced, going to a pharmacy can be a convenient and safe option. Just make sure you are well-informed about the piercing method used and communicate your preferences to the pharmacist to ensure a positive and satisfying experience.
