Where should the wristwatch be worn?

For centuries, having the time at your wrist has become indispensable during the hectic lives of everyday life. But on which wrist should you wear your watch? Is there a written rule that dictates you should prefer one wrist over another? Today we discover together where you should wear your wristwatch .

Traditions to be respected

Although there is no real rule that requires wearing a chronograph on a specific wrist, habit and tradition make us always wear it on the left . A legacy of the past, which brings us back to the old winding watches, more comfortable to wind on the left wrist. In short: even though watches are now automatic, the habit of wearing them on the left has remained, also for practical reasons and to leave room for other accessories.

What Etiquette Says

The famous Galateo does not have any strict rules regarding watches, but it does provide some useful advice especially for men. It is important, in fact, to decide whether or not to wear a watch, based on the chosen outfit , especially on formal occasions. Etiquette in fact provides for a particular occasion in which wearing a watch is absolutely forbidden, namely when wearing a tailcoat. Much better, in this case, a pocket watch. With tuxedos and morning suits, however, you can safely bury your watch, as long as it is covered by your shirt cuff, paying attention to the material the strap is made of.

Formal occasions

For both men and women, it is good to remember that formal occasions still require formal watches . Some general rules are to prefer a diameter never exceeding 41 mm, an analog chronograph and created in precious materials such as gold, nickel silver, platinum. Of course, the combination of watch and accessories is important: gold wants gold! For women, thin leather straps are better. For men, classic wristwatches are better, avoiding sports and digital models (which are good for every day, but not for special occasions!). In short: analog watches are preferable for elegant and formal occasions. Smartwatches, sports watches and digital watches are preferable for a more casual and practical style.

In addition

The watch strap you choose must be the right width! A strap that is too wide is a sign of a lack of elegance. Small additional note: the watch face should always be positioned on the upper part of our wrist! And you, on which wrist do you prefer to wear your watch? See you here, very soon, with a new article! Olga
