How to clean yellow and white gold

How can you clean gold?

Have you ever had your grandparents give you precious items they wore when they were young or found them in old drawers? Vintage is back in fashion and learning how to clean gold correctly, more or less recent, is an excellent skill.

Once you have "inherited" the gold you will have asked yourself this question, perhaps with the fear of ruining it.

Why do we decide to clean gold?

  • To restore the shine to our precious items and show them off as they were originally;
  • Willingness to resell your gold in optimal condition;
  • Add value to an overlooked piece of jewelry;
  • Simply for a question of cleanliness , given that it is in contact with our body.

Methods for cleaning yellow gold

One of the simplest and most home-made methods for yellow gold is to use common dish soap and hot water - not boiling -: immerse the gold for about ten minutes and rinse - sparkling water is also fine -. Some detergents could be aggressive, so it is preferable to choose a neutral soap for cleaning.

Methods for cleaning white gold

It is more delicate than yellow gold but, in any case, you can use the method for yellow gold, prolonging the immersion in hot water and detergent a little longer.

Be careful with jewelry with special settings or that set stones or inserts . It is preferable to soak a cloth and clean the jewelry indirectly in this way.

And to polish it?

To polish gold you can use:

  • Specific products for precious metals, cleaning them with a soft cloth;
  • Toothbrush and neutral soap, being careful not to scratch the surface.
