Gioielli in aeroporto: trasportare e indossare preziosi

Jewelry at the airport: carrying and wearing precious items

Vacation is the perfect place to show off and combine our precious jewels. If we travel by plane the question of how to transport and wear jewelry at the airport becomes vital.

The airport has very specific rules for the transportation of precious metals. To travel with jewelry on a plane, it is best to prepare for check-in, security checks, and customs declarations .

Here are three tips to guide you on how to transport your jewelry on a plane and enjoy some well-deserved relaxation.

1. Carrying jewelry at check-in

The first rule for carrying and wearing jewelry at the airport is to put it in your carry-on luggage.

Leaving your jewelry in your checked baggage at check-in , confusing it with your clothes, means running the risk of losing your luggage.

There are practical and tidy solutions for storing jewelry in your hand luggage, such as rolls or travel jewelry cases . You can choose from several space-saving models designed to store rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces together. For long necklaces of pearls or stones, it is best to use separate bags.

As a travel watch holder, you can opt for soft or rigid models with padding, to protect them from bumps and scratches based on their sentimental and economic value.

2. Wearing jewelry at security checkpoints

If we wear jewelry on the day of departure, we will have to successfully pass through the metal detector .

Gold and silver jewelry, such as wristwatches, can be detected as conductive or magnetic metals. Wearing jewelry while waiting in line at security checkpoints means running the risk of delays for all travelers.

The advice is to remove the jewelry we wear while we are in line at security checks and place them in the appropriate trays, better if in a separate bag or in the jewelry box of the hand luggage . During the operation we avoid prying eyes !

It is not recommended to wear bulky and heavy jewelry at the airport on the day of departure . A light chain and minimal rings can remain on the skin. The metal detector is somewhat sensitive to weight, so a few grams of metal could escape the waves.

3. Transporting jewelry between airport and customs

To travel with your jewelry and wear it safely at the airport, count the departure and destination airports.

If we travel in the EU with jewelry, for the free circulation of goods, there are no declarations to make at customs . The classic limits in force for cash, tobacco and alcohol do not apply.

The situation is different if we travel with jewelry to non-EU countries . When returning to Italy from a non-EU country by plane, we have the right to carry jewelry for personal use for a maximum value of 430 euros , to be exempt from duties. Please note that this is a maximum limit that applies to the total of imported goods, including jewelry!

In other countries the rules are different. For example, in the US, if we buy a watch or a piece of jewelry abroad, regardless of its value, we must declare it to customs, but we do not automatically pay duties due to CBP exemptions.
