The story

The ring finger has always been considered magical, in many cultures: it is believed that from the ring finger a vein starts that goes straight to the heart. This, called ''amoris vena'' , makes the ring finger the symbol of eternal love.

The first to use rings as a symbol of marriage were the Romans, with the anulus pronubis, initially made of iron and gold and given by the groom during the engagement.

In the Middle Ages, the custom of blessing the wedding ring during the religious ceremony was introduced, for Christian marriage. Tradition dictated that it should be placed first on the index finger, then on the middle finger, to end up perfectly set on the ring finger, the finger of love.

Curiosities from the world

Did you know that in England the choice of the finger on which to wear the wedding ring is free? In the Prayer Book it only speaks of "the ring to be worn on the left hand", without specifying on which finger.

Many European nations customarily move the ring to the right hand, after the wedding ceremony.

In Jewish ceremonies, the wedding ring should be worn on the index finger, the middle finger, or the thumb.

Muslim weddings do not involve rings, but many newlyweds wear wedding rings as a symbol of eternal love. In this case, men would wear rings on the right hand and women on the left.
